And of course most of the photos are so vague in my mind . . . . Nevertheless, it helps me to keep track of what's what just a little bit - especially the pics of meals, which it is amusing to find are repeated year after year in the same restaurant.

The photos of my dh and myself (above) were snapped in Le Pain Quotidien near Lincoln Centre - a quick snack prior to an opera. Le Pain Quotidien is a chain, but nonetheless excellent for that, doing so well what it does in an informal and warm atmosphere. We like the fact that vegan offerings are clearly marked. Not wanting a huge meal that will put us to sleep during the music, we opted for a Mediterranean platter to share - which meant, in effect, tabouleh or something like it, hummus and eggplant puree served with lashings of different kinds of bread. Nice pick!

We also made our usual trip to Candle 79 on the upper east side. That restaurant is hard to beat - vegan, organic, warm and friendly and patronized by all discerning people. Their seitan steaks are incredible - but so is everything I've tried there.

The Highlight Of Our Trip, however, as far as eating experiences were concerned, was - dah dah dah DAH! -

PURE FOOD AND WINE RESTAURANT

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 372px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/S9YPfejPO_I/AAAAAAAABgs/RHsdWiGC2Os/s400/James,+PureFoodAndWine+NYC,+Oct.+09.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464572231311899634" />

This remarkable restaurant is well named. Pure Food and Wine uses no processed food, is totally vegan (of course!) and is completely raw, not heating the food above 118 F, thus preserving the enzymes, minerals and vitamins plus, I should add, the flavour. This is not a boring salad place, but a house of gourmet food which is meticulously prepared and inventively presented. Although the restaurant opened five years earlier, our first experience of it was indeed in October 2009. Warm panelling and deep luxurious reds set the scene for an evening not to be forgotten.

We had, as a light first course, a shared order of olives plus a cheese plate - all raw and vegan. The cheeses were from Dr Cow. These are made from tree nuts and are flavoured in various ways. I was skeptical, but we had to try them, and was amazed to find that these raw cheeses were not only far better than any vegan cheese I had ever tried but competed convincingly with my memory of excellent non-vegetarian cheeses I had sought out and made such a fetish of in the bad old days before I gave up all that. The platter was delightfully presented, with raw crackers (for those I assume they use a dehydrator at below 118 F, as I do to make my own at home). Sadly they platter was half gone before I remembered that a photo might be appropriate to preserve the memory of the evening.

For our main courses, we stepped into unknown territory. My dh had raw lasagna (and allowed me the tiniest bite) with layered vegetables, using paper-thin zucchini as the 'noodle' part of it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 339px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/S9YTRIaa62I/AAAAAAAABg0/tQxaVcHjGhs/s400/ZucchiniLasagna.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464576382897679202" />

At room temperature it was an absolute winner and I was ready to mourn the fact that I hadn't ordered it also - until I tasted my own choice.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 261px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/S9YTu05ncYI/AAAAAAAABg8/9zrJCOg78ms/s400/RawCocnutNoodlesInCoconutCurryThaiStyleSauce.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464576893055889794" />

This was a slightly curry-flavoured dish with a base of raw coconut noodles with vegetables in a creamy sauce - and I was pretty stingy in passing out tastes of that one.

We couldn't believe our luck - or the fact that all this could be produced out of a kitchen that doesn't have a stove in it. Our ideas of raw food (with which we had been experimenting) took a sudden turn, and we have been seeking good raw recipes ever since.

For dessert?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 127px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/S9YU0UMk9PI/AAAAAAAABhE/VdhOqGG36O4/s400/RawIcecreamEtc.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464578086867891442" />

There are lovely desserts on the menu, but after two courses we kept it light and simple (although nothing is 'simple' at this incredible restaurant). We shared an icecream (not made from dairy) dessert with berries. I wish I could remember all the flavours in the dish, but all I'm left with is a memory of something magical.

We made a solemn vow to return here on every trip, even if it meant that one of our old haunts would have to be deleted from our list. Such a great evening!

Sigh.

Moving along . . .

One thing we rather miss where we live, however, is really good Asian food that is tasty, truly spicy when it's supposed to be, and not to heavy in fats and oils as well as being reasonably authentic to the original cuisine. In New York we can do all that and have it vegan! Like, WOW!!

VEGAN KOREAN DELIGHTS

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 227px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/S9YAAh_xwMI/AAAAAAAABf8/S1ZcDsZE7ag/s400/dumplingsHanGawi.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464555206986547394" />

One place we absolutely have to visit when in New York is the vegan Korean HanGawi Restaurant The photo above shows how quickly a platter of the Spicy Baby Dumplings appetizer can disappear. I had meant to take a pic of the whole presentation, but sadly hunger got in the way once we caught the spicy scent of the dish and had a taste - and another - and another. There was another appetizer, but that one didn't last long enough to rescue for the camera either!

HanGawi also has a sister restaurant, Franchia Teahouse and Restaurant, which we love for lunch. It is less formal than HanGawi, also Korean and vegan, and after all this time I would be hard pressed to say which dishes were eaten at one restaurant or the other. We tend to visit each one, only a day apart.

I should mention that the food is mostly organic and totally vegan. The Korean mountain roots and mountain greens (mostly but not exclusively at HanGawi) are superlative, but I am sure I wouldn't know what they are in English so can't try them elsewhere. A pity. They are incorporated into many of the dishes. We like the spicier choices.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 281px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/S9YDzOUee7I/AAAAAAAABgM/YotjxOvXk-w/s400/Tofu%26MushroomIronPotHanGawi.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464559376412867506" />

Stone pot dishes are excellent - and if you like them spicy you can get that too. Both restaurants offer these - including one version (in several variations) which has a base of rice (brown or white). That's one of my special favourites.

Anyone who likes mushrooms would be delighted with the large variety served.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 260px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/S9YHEfLLLuI/AAAAAAAABgU/CY_bIb6uEwE/s400/MushroomsHanGawi.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464562971529916130" />

Our last meal in NYC is, ironically, always at a chain - the Thai restaurant Pong Sri near our B&B in Chelsea. They are quick and courteous and are happy to produce vegan food from their Vegetarian Menu section. We stumble onto the plane a couple of hours later happily full of good and spicy food to sustain our hearts and minds until our next trip.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 305px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/S9YKqXP2vCI/AAAAAAAABgc/Cb-0O5Et7bs/s400/Buddha,+Met.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464566920771976226" />

TORONTO, JULY 2009

[POST EDITED - because clearly the date was prior to August of last year! When we first visited Fressen some years ago, it had a different style of menu - the usual first, second and third courses we know at most restaurants - but since then it has adopted a wonderful 'tapas' or small-dish way of presenting its remarkable creations, served 'family style' for sharing. This means that one can sample more dishes and at the same time tailor one's order to the appetite.

We started with a wonderful sweet potato soup (their daily special) and then pressed on to three more savoury dishes and a dessert. The photos may be a little blurred because honestly it was an effort to keep the other two out of the food while I snapped one or two photos of each with my cell phone - well, you can imagine.

At the top of this item is the Moroccan Stew, described on the menu as "Stewed sweet potato, onion, carrots and chickpeas in a cumin infused tomato broth," which I think was my favourite, except perhaps for . . . .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 263px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/Spm9U3T09gI/AAAAAAAABWk/mQKxcnWzF0E/s320/FressenRavioliCrop.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375535796385543682" />

(ABOVE: FRESSEN'S SQUASH RAVIOLI)

This excellent dish was "Rice flour wrapped squash ravioli (w) with basil and creamed sesame butter, sautéed with leeks and basil in a tomato and olive oil sauce." Wonderful. Another winner, but how about . . .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 281px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/Spm9Uuh-vpI/AAAAAAAABWc/81gucM-esIU/s320/FressenFiloCrop.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375535794028986002" />

(ABOVE: FRESSEN'S FILO WITH MUSHROOM FILLING)

This dish was from the 'crispy' section of the menu (they love to designate their dishes according to texture) and is described this way: "Sliced shiitake and crimini mushrooms mixed with shredded spinach in cashew cream wrapped in a filo pastry puff." Talk about a taste sensation!

After those dishes we didn't feel we could manage anything more - but our server announced a wonderful chocolate dessert (see below) with fresh fruit - and it defies description except to say that the chocolate came in two textures - mousse and not-the-mousse, was exquisitely flavoured and had the freshest of fruit to accompany it. It was a struggle but we made the sacrifice and finished the lot. Indeed I very nearly didn't get to photograph it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 270px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/Spm5aCLlO2I/AAAAAAAABVk/IEbTUkVryI8/s320/FressenDessertCrop.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375531487156583266" />

And, oh yes, we accompanied the meal with a nice bottle of organic red wine.

With a meal like that under our belts early in the trip, everything else would have to seem like an anti-climax. My dh and did, however, have a delightful if hurried lunch at Commensal. This restaurant is vegetarian, but dishes are clearly marked as to whether they are vegan or have dairy or eggs. We chose to sample curried dishes, with me being more greedy than my spouse. As a result, the plates look a little strangely arranged (by us - Commensal is a self-serve restaurant, priced according to weight), mine somewhat light on vegetables.

Here you go, for what it's worth:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 274px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SpnGC9KT5XI/AAAAAAAABW8/2xAywyubiIM/s320/PCommensalCrop.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375545384323245426" />

A final note on eating (I'll skip the meals we didn't particularly enjoy!) - for my first time ever I breakfasted on vegan sushi from a stall downstairs in the Eaton Centre, where we'd gone to accommodate the carb cravings of the third member of our party. It's a good thing the sushi places aren't open around home early enough for breakfast or this could get to be a serious addiction. I've enjoyed sushi many times of course, but there's something about starting the day that way that seems to defy all sorts of rules I was raised with - which I suppose was part of its delight. Must remember this trick for next time!!!

TORONTO, APRIL 2009

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/Sgcn2ktczOI/AAAAAAAABSs/AEqPisJ_k5Y/s320/DSCF2923.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334276102164368610" />

Toronto isn't that far from us, but we don't get up there as often as we like or, probably, as we should. In April, however, we travelled up to meet with a dear old friend from college days who had come from Alberta to see her new grandchild. We started with lunch in Yorkville at the Cafe Nervosa, where our friend took this photo of the two of us:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SgcjxAFP3CI/AAAAAAAABSM/hVo4Y_RvrgY/s320/DSCF2913.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334271608386214946" />

Cafe (or as it sometimes calls itself Trattoria) Nervosa doesn't really have a vegetarian or vegan menu, but the waiters and chef are very obliging and are happy to provide something acceptable by making substitutions and omissions re dishes on the menu. And it's a buzzy place :)

After having a very very long lunch, our friend had to get back to her family and we moved on to the Royal Ontario Museum for our usual fix of things old and interesting.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SgckNXyHh7I/AAAAAAAABSU/UhGO-3-UG2g/s320/DSCF2914.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334272095784765362" />

The museum, as you'll see, has recently had a wing added with a rather startling entrance and frontage on one side. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it, but the space works just fine and it's good to have the extra space inside.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/Sgcma9eUCTI/AAAAAAAABSc/rZzF3o6qbmw/s320/DSCF2918.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334274528263801138" />

That evening we went to

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/Sgcm8iMhwuI/AAAAAAAABSk/VLL4VERGZaI/s320/DSCF2922.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334275105056998114" />

The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts for a performance of Verdi's 'Simon Boccanegra' - not one of my favourite operas nor, it seems the fave of the critics I read afterwards, but it was a lovely evening.

The next day we walked from our hotel in Yorkville to the Art Gallery of Ontario -

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SgcoNcBMTII/AAAAAAAABS0/OtojakaiiSQ/s320/DSCF2924.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334276494968245378" />

which has recently been reopened after some considerable additions - including an added storey plus a new frontage - by the very talented Toronto-born architect Frank Gehry. I'm talking about JAMBALAYA which is a haven for all peeps, veg or otherwise. Being vegan, my husband and I have been thrilled at Master Chef Kevin Greaves's attitude towards cuisine. He has a vegetarian and vegan friendly section of his menu, and he takes veg/vegan needs and tastes very seriously indeed.

Is the food serious though? Hah! This is a cuisine that is in the process of changing, moving, evolving, while at the same time keeping in touch with its roots. It is an exciting cuisine which includes (and sometimes melds, for special guests) Thai, Cajun and Caribbean cuisine. The ingredients are fresh and delightful, and if you are lucky (like most of the time!) you will get a chance to talk about the offerings with Kevin's lovely wife Denise too - she is so involved with this space! Kevin religiously, so to speak, walks out from the kitchen to see how his dishes are being received and to chat with customers, and the at-home atmosphere guarantees we all return again and again.

The thing is, however, that Jambalaya is now in the process of moving from its old location on Richmond Street, London, to a new and better space at 119 Dundas Street, London, Ontario, to reopen this next month (March 2009). We can't wait!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SahMnhUZN9I/AAAAAAAABQ0/dyrMxbfnK28/s320/DSCF2732.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307576402698647506" />

Good luck to Kevin and Denyse and to their staff - we look forward to seeing you AS SOON AS you have your doors open on your new space!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SahNVuktOFI/AAAAAAAABQ8/t8A75XpdoOc/s320/DSCF2736.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307577196530710610" />

NOTE: Photos above were taken the last night of Jambalaya at its original London location - we had, understandably, a bit of a party and not a few weepy moments. Great place. Gotta GO there!!!!

Now, you see in a couple of photos my husband's smiling face in with the proprietors - and no, he's not a part of this restaurant (and neither am I) but is a happy customer!!!!

And now for the other side of the news? Well, Kevin moves from Jambalaya on Richmond Row and moves to Jambalaya, probably this next month, at 119 Dundas, with better space and an interesting new menus (including, of course, the old favourites). And what happens to the Richmond Row premises????

Veg Out Restaurant, from Stratford ON, is moving into Jambalaya's old quarters on Richmond with an upmarket version of their Stratford restaurant and more! This is great news for vegans too!

So London Ontario is looking up, guys! We are suddenly so blessed!

New York - January 2009

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 222px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXzcz0x6y-I/AAAAAAAABKI/hvJTVVmgHQE/s320/DSCF2627-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295350044780317666" />

Now this isn't NYC - indeedy no. As a matter of fact we were waiting for hours and hours to take off and my dh suggested a glass of wine to make things a little, er, well, less stressed. And so it did, as you see from this silly photo. Now that's the trouble about travelling in the winter - weather happens!

Nevertheless, we did finally get off and a little over 12 hours after we started out we arrived at our little hotel in Manhattan. Since this was by now well after nine in the evening, we headed for the nearest place likely to be able to supply us with a vegan meal and - and we struck it lucky. The PongSri in Chelsea (but they've got a couple of other locations, I understand) produced a delicious meal to two starving travellers in short order. Love Thai food!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 283px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXzh3Dbkr3I/AAAAAAAABKQ/Sh-jrfHQOBk/s320/DSCF2633-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295355597810872178" />

Above is my hungry dh perusing the extensive menu (and finding the vegan options) and below are the dishes quickly photographed before we demolished them.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 184px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXzjaZ04fWI/AAAAAAAABKg/5LWk43c7bsk/s320/DSCF2636-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295357304629656930" />

This was a lovely eggplant with basil dish - excellent choice.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 318px; height: 167px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXzjaY6LeNI/AAAAAAAABKY/KxV6H5WznlQ/s320/DSCF2635-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295357304383437010" />

And this one was tofu etc. in a coconut sauce - spiced just right. (Sorry, I'm terrible at remembering the names of Thai dishes!)

This late at night (by the time we actually were eating) we skipped dessert and coffee, so I can't say what that part of the menu was like for vegans.

The next morning was a bit of a slow start - we had a nice breakfast (having to scavenge a bit for what was actually vegan) in the Library at our hotel, then headed off slowly for Lincoln Center to collect our pre-booked tickets from the box office - for Orfeo Ed Euridice which we were to see that night.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXzlJyddc4I/AAAAAAAABKo/dYcYKa7xs6A/s320/DSCF2637-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295359218207781762" />

Then we headed off for lunch - which happened to be right at the time of the Inauguration, so we had the place almost completely to ourselves. The place? Beyoglu where we had been on a previous visit. Sublime food - and very friendly towards vegans. Sadly, I forgot I had the camera at first so didn't take pics of the food, but we ordered various mezze as we usually do in such circumstances. This restaurant might produce the best mezze I have ever tasted outside of Instanbul.

Here we are looking rather contented after a looooong lunch.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXzoBSM3RmI/AAAAAAAABKw/1Qt8Qx12noE/s320/DSCF2645-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295362370644166242" />

Since it was rather a special day for us (quite apart from the Inauguration of President Obama), we prevailed upon our server to take the above photo. Then it was off to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 263px; height: 186px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXzqYHnh9TI/AAAAAAAABK4/m_L7hTkiMiI/s320/DSCF2646-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295364961963472178" />

We were here mainly to see the Renaissance and Love exhibition, but of course we wandered a bit first, as you see below.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 135px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXztCFgYisI/AAAAAAAABLA/rwjLLD5sFgI/s200/DSCF2649-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295367881974385346" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 168px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXztTAFc89I/AAAAAAAABLI/o2JCBJjRbGQ/s200/DSCF2657-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295368172577027026" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXztnS5MuDI/AAAAAAAABLQ/B-IuTM4wEo0/s200/DSCF2651-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295368521223288882" />

Excellent - but not enough time before we had to go back to change for the evening and meet our friend pre-opera. The opera? Superb - of course. We went on to Cafe des Artistes afterwards. Superb venue - and if you're interested in the wall murals, see HERE. Well, it was a special event, as I say!

Another day, another place to eat (honestly, it's not ALL we did in NYC, but it certainly looks like it here):

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXzxKjT0_1I/AAAAAAAABLY/TBLGSXoOpIc/s320/DSCF2673-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295372425460252498" />

This is Franchia - a Korean Tea House which is vegan and an excellent spot for a meal. Not just tea either. We had the prix-fixe menu, as we usually do there, and remembered to photograph the appetizer course (though not the first course - I had miso soup and it was very well made).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 319px; height: 125px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXzzTizb59I/AAAAAAAABLg/Tx-TDhgYPXo/s320/DSCF2667-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295374778966468562" />

Lovely food and great presentation! Unfortunately, again we forgot to take pics of the main course - or at least until we had demolished half of it. It was so good!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 142px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXz1pERDYtI/AAAAAAAABL4/5vFAI2MViXk/s200/DSCF2669-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295377347749569234" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 168px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXz1e4M_lnI/AAAAAAAABLw/PK_RcKVLk2s/s200/DSCF2671-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295377172712625778" />
We shared a wonderful vegan curry hotpot and also vegan 'meatballs' in a brown sauce. After the first taste, the rest was a blur! We finished with a simple sorbet - which disappeared pretty quickly.

That evening we were to meet up with friends at their apartment - but not before stopping by Bemelman's for a few minutes, as is our wont). We like to listen to Chris Gillespie sing at his piano - great retro music.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 212px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXz4TH2bxwI/AAAAAAAABMA/dBDZPlzHaic/s320/DSCF2675-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295380269289424642" />

It's the decor that makes this place especially interesting (a bit different from that the previous evening, though!). Note the lampshade at dh's elbow . . .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 250px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SXz4zk4UYPI/AAAAAAAABMI/ySWnV_ilmH4/s320/DSCF2676-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295380826837770482" />

. . . and the scrap of mural behind and above me. Such fun - and the walls are covered in them. Great illustrator, that Bemelman!

Then, having paid homage to painting, music and the god of wine, we rushed on to meet our friends!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SX0A4m8TLJI/AAAAAAAABMQ/GiRJAH4gQZ8/s320/DSCF2665-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295389709383707794" />

The restaurant that evening was Candle 79 - which is a sister establishment of Candle Cafe but not to be confused with it. (The website has a link to the newer Candle 79 further down the window.) And the food and ambiance were superb as always. Now why can't we get the chef to move down the street from us here!!!! And of course, the food and ambiance paled against the company, as should always be the case when dining. Oh and did I mention that the food is absolutely vegan? How's that for the perfect place!

Lunchtime our last day was at Dawat, which is the famed actress-turned-cookbook-author Madhur Jaffrey's restaurant. It is of course Indian, and although not vegetarian it has a good veggie menu including several vegan selections. We enjoyed it enough the first time we were there - a couple of years ago - to want to return and we weren't sorry. This was another case of failing to remember the camera until we had made inroads into the main dishes. (The appetizer had been some lightly fried okra/bindi which had been sliced finely lengthways. It was more delicious than I imagined it could be.)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 319px; height: 174px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SX0D5W-UlBI/AAAAAAAABMY/krXx8F3Ljgc/s320/DSCF2677-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295393020811973650" />

The above photo shows Bunhi Gobhi (stirfried cauliflower with cummin seeds, ginger and coriander leaves) and Channa Masala (chickpeas).

Apart from returning to the Met Museum and going on to a couple of others, we also found our way into the the J.P. Morgan Library and then the New York Public Library, which I hadn't visited in ages, for an exhibition or two.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SX0FUSh3SNI/AAAAAAAABMg/a_mRnnl6n30/s320/DSCF2689-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295394582986967250" />

I had forgotten what a marvellous interior it has.

The final evening? To HanGawi, a Korean restaurant which is totally vegan and which specializes in ancient grains, mountain greens and mountain roots. This is an experience not to be missed. It had been five years since we had first been there, and I did rather fear that my memory of it might have been enhanced over time. Not so.

This was the appetizer course - one serving requested since we had eaten so well at lunchtime.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 185px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SX0GtZcSQ2I/AAAAAAAABMo/zazZ5Rg2itE/s320/DSCF2693-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295396113850975074" />

A wonderful light selection of mountain greens and roots, delicately flavoured. We made short work of it.

The following photo shows tofu and mushrooms in a lemon ginger sauce (little bowls thoughtfully provided). As you see, we had all but finished it before I remembered I'd taken no photo (got to do something about that!)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 223px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SX0HsJD7HuI/AAAAAAAABMw/h9LIddpXOiI/s320/DSCF2695-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295397191785586402" />

And the second dish we ordered was this lovely Mongolian Hot Pot - also nearly depleted by the time the photo was taken.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SX0IrrtozOI/AAAAAAAABM4/Lic5Gif3nzo/s320/DSCF2697-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295398283419110626" />

My dh declared this to be one of the best restaurants ever!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SX0L8LN_HvI/AAAAAAAABNI/V_WV4msQnAw/s320/DSCF2698-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295401865289080562" />

Next morning, home to Canada - an uneventful trip, thank goodness. A short trip quickly turns into a delight!

We visited, as you see above, the Guggenheim, after a wonderful evening before that at Bemelman's, then to see our friends for a glass of wine, then on with them to Candle 79, conveniently just around the corner from where they live. How great to have such a great restaurant in one's own neighbourhood. I swear that if I had Candle 79 so close to me I'd never cook again!!

At the Guggenehim, we saw what wasn't quite supposed to be there: the tail-end of the superb Louise Bourgeois exhibition that had supposedly already closed. This was of particular interest to us, since we had seen her exhibition in Paris (see previous entry here)in the spring. Another exciting exhibit at the Guggenheim was the photographic exhibition by American photographer Catherine Opie. This exhibition will be on until the 7th of January and is not to be missed.

After paying homage to our usual faves at the Guggenheim, we wandered out and down the street, seeking a way to get to a late lunch. Manhattan is of course serious dog territory, which delights us every time, and we do tend to get delayed, much to the discomfort (I am sure) of various dogwalkers and dog guardians, by admiring all the wonderful pooches on parade. Even the cars parked along the street seem to be celebrating matters canine, as you see below:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 170px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SUv9X_rHOhI/AAAAAAAABFU/j-KAofW9-r0/s320/DogPlate.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281593576693119506" />

On the way to lunch we passed the Flatiron Building, which always catches my imagination

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SUv9YD9gxcI/AAAAAAAABFc/xYPoq-5TaDU/s320/FlatironBldg.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281593577844032962" />

as we found our way to a lovely Vegan Korean restaurant, Franchia which we have visited before. You see me being very very serious contemplating the many offerings as well as the wine list.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 297px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SUwJBkHPSaI/AAAAAAAABGU/G2IEtR27BfQ/s320/PatFranchia.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281606385477306786" />

They also have an excellent Prix Fixe menu at lunchtime, which I highly recommend. Delicious as always! We have plans to revisit Franchia's sister restaurant, Han Gawi, on our next trip. Han Gawi is more formal and is open only in the evenings. We have been there only once and have vowed to return!

We also spent an incredible amount of time at the Met, and I'm interested to note that most of the photos I have are taken in the various asian galleries.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SUv9YrLtp-I/AAAAAAAABFk/rvqX7CkgBQo/s320/Met.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281593588372580322" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 312px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SUwJaEc_-QI/AAAAAAAABGc/LcIeG2T6OIQ/s320/JMet.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281606806475372802" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SUwJ0s0bB9I/AAAAAAAABGk/Xii59L45TGc/s320/PMet.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281607263987632082" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SUwFmyt0CvI/AAAAAAAABGE/BIQAfJ3LFfI/s320/Buddha.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281602627005844210" />

Asian culture seemed to be a theme this trip, including, later, a visit to the Rubin Museum in Chelsea which specializes in Himalayan art - a place which we had not visited previously. (I highly recommend this lovely museum.) To add to this asian theme, we had even, unknown to us before we registered, been booked into the Bamboo Room at our favourite New York small hotel (it calls itself a Bed and Breakfast and is in Chelsea: The Inn On 23rd). We were almost, but not quite, ready to believe that Powers were at work!

Another luncheon experience before we left was at Beyoglu, a Turkish restaurant. This is very good food, and for vegans this omnivore restaurant has a good selection of mezze; they can advise which ones will suit ones ethical and aesthetic needs. Service of course was excellent and portions were more than generous, so our choices were excellent.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 245px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SUwGj7uPraI/AAAAAAAABGM/ofpFK-7bWnE/s320/Beyoglu.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281603677395594658" />

In the summer, Beyoglu also serves on its outdoor patio, but it was just a tad chilly when we were there - although I did see one stalwart soul braving the elements.

Time in New York is never enough. Next visit I swear I'll take the camera with me everywhere, but somehow there's so much going on that I forget that I even have it with me.

We'll be back before long. Indeed, the next visit is already lined up. So lovely to have this city's new places to discover every time!

Paris, Spring 2008

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_eFdTShAI/AAAAAAAAAv4/3yYcLDx88go/s320/moulinrouge2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251159875883533314" />

Here it is, the cliche of all cliches - photo taken the last afternoon we were in Paris, just to prove to ourselves that we really had been there again (to the city, that is, not to the nightclub - we saw the MoulinRouge only from its exterior) AND of course in honour of the great film of the same name!

And another cliche? Somehow, however, they don't seem to get photographed as much. But here we were in Paris after years of being away, and it was almost overwhelming. Here's my dh on our first day - fountains are irresistible, aren't they?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLx-4D5olmI/AAAAAAAAAto/9UZIAKfRfAM/s320/JamesFountainDay1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241203567937230434" />

It had been a lovely day - despite the horrors of transatlantic travel - and here we are prowling around after a quick coffee while they made our room ready in a little hotel in the Marais. After we had dumped our luggage (we travel with carry-ons only - inconvenient but less hassle) we headed out to a Middle Eastern restaurant that we had read was vegan-friendly. It was called Chez Marianne and was in the Pletzel - and picking and choosing carefully among the mezze kind of courses one could make up a delicious vegan meal. The servers spoke English better than we spoke French, which is always a plus ;)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyBCt2P_mI/AAAAAAAAAtw/Q4RCLlP7lHE/s320/ChezMarianne2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241205950019272290" />

The photo above is only a corner of it, and although they do have an attractive informal interior we decided every time we went there (three times in all) that we liked to sit outside.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyBitDVBCI/AAAAAAAAAt4/ixgPScgGbo4/s320/ChezMarianne.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241206499561505826" />

This made for a lovely midday break from walking our feet off (yes, we know there's a metro, but we like to walk!).

What next to add? Well, those who know us well know that we are addicted to art, architecture and museums in general, so we visited the Delacroix house on the left bank. It was interesting, but strangely I was enchanted by the courtyard garden.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyCKSD-2HI/AAAAAAAAAuA/eOlYBPOwca8/s320/DelacroixHouse.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241207179511257202" />

It's just the kind of place I would find enchanting as a spot away from the cares of the world yet near enough to what matters most to me - in Delacroix's case, art - to rest and then inspire rather than distract. Another lovely afternoon!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_g-RZf61I/AAAAAAAAAwI/f9RQAq9_KgA/s320/FlowersDelacroixHouse.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251163050964151122" />

After that, of course, we needed a break - a nice sit down with a glass of wine. Where better, if one is paying homage to heroes than this place:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyDHinHQII/AAAAAAAAAuI/egFxmILn378/s320/deuxmagots.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241208231925596290" />

This is Deux Magots - right on the tiny square named for hits famous habitues, Simone de Beavoir and Jean-Paul Sartre. It's considered a tourist trap, and no doubt it is, but we couldn't resist given our thirst quotient and both our hangups about this pair! And of course I took a snap of my dh in a contemplative, if not quite philosophical, moment:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyJGLF2hgI/AAAAAAAAAvA/iTMdu2Nawy0/s320/jamesdeuxmagot.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241214805501969922" />

Speaking of favourite places on the left bank, here's one I can highly recommend: It's called Le Grenier.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyEDWLkOwI/AAAAAAAAAuQ/VHd7TFASC6I/s320/LeGrenier.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241209259380980482" />

This is a vegan-friendly vegetarian restaurant, tiny but cozy with wonderful service, excellent food and a wine list which includes organic vegan selections.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyOKHEjeWI/AAAAAAAAAvo/jIutL8USz64/s320/BarGrenier.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241220370700400994" />

The photo above shows part of the interior - the bar area adjacent to the tiny kitchen.Here's the photo the proprietor took (at his insistence) on the last time there, the day before we flew back home.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyOhhZ5bXI/AAAAAAAAAvw/NN9m3XxHBd0/s320/JamesPatAtGrenier.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241220772906233202" />

We look as delighted as we felt!

And here is one of the dishes I really enjoyed; I had it twice. It was a vegan cassoulet - with beautiful white beans, tomatoes and other delights, some tofu, and the most delicious sauce and and herbs imaginable. Here is my dh's serving of it ('Hands off, man, I gotta take its photo!') the last day. We tried other things too, but that one was really special to both of us.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_fWgD7z5I/AAAAAAAAAwA/7GYUU0-8mDQ/s320/CassouletGrenierCrop.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251161268193841042" />

Yumm!

This restaurant is located not far from the famous Shakespeare & Co. Bookshop:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_p5MmkaDI/AAAAAAAAAxQ/flWqRRCDaOQ/s320/shakespeareandco.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251172859382097970" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_p5hi_8nI/AAAAAAAAAxY/D2DU-hfoacg/s320/shakespeareandco2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251172865004270194" />

Oh I should mention this place - Grand Appetit - near the Place de la Bastille:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyHbftNq9I/AAAAAAAAAuw/q7x7mmIWT-Q/s320/GrandAppetiti21May.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241212972789771218" />

This is vegan and inexpensive and we fell into it our first evening. They had some plain but delicious offerings and although we had only soup (fantastically good) and a salad, not being hungry after our extended lunch at Chez Marianne, we made a note to visit it again next time. It isn't quite the place for a romantic interlude, but is very popular with the local crowd as well as visitors. We found it a bit dour, but that might have been because we were so very delighted with our arrival in Paris that day that only a welcoming brass band could possibly have matched our mood (and of course Paris supplied that too!).

Just to prove we took Paris as seriously as we did when we were young and not so long out of our studies, we did visit the Louvre:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyFycDqG_I/AAAAAAAAAuo/PrwmTgs0dpw/s320/Louvre%26Pyramide.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241211167923903474" />

Sadly, it is indeed overrun by visitors (yup, like ourselves) and when we were there it was truly, er, difficult. Never-the-LESS (as Kate Hepburn/Rosey Sayer was always saying to Humphrey Bogar/Charlie Allnut) we loved messing around in the French paintings well away from DaVinci Code tourists for an afternoon.

Another museum that delighted was in the Institut du Monde Arabe.And the building itself? Absolutely fabulous. Here are a couple of shots of the interior - one looking outside and one looking up a staircase. Gotta be seen!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_i3IpVMII/AAAAAAAAAwQ/TQBxO3EOLmc/s320/ArabMuseumInterior.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251165127378808962" />

Those little openings, so beautifully decorative, are controlled by the sun - opening and closing automatically. So clever!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_jUUUvUMI/AAAAAAAAAwY/ycqb6NcfpTY/s320/ArabMuseumStaircase.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251165628729872578" />

And speaking of celebrated architecture, here is a shot of the exterior of the Pompidou Centre where we saw a wonderful exhibition by Louise Bourgeois (sorry, you'll have to google for her!) - absolutely brilliant. One of her sculptures is shown in the ground floor interior shot which follows.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_lQiAxm-I/AAAAAAAAAw4/ZU117eT8Hvc/s320/Pompidou2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251167762708012002" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_lQsjMbpI/AAAAAAAAAxA/7-4ZCScHjhA/s320/PompidouSpider.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251167765536730770" />

Grotesque? Well maybe a little for arachnophobes (among which please count one person who goes by the name of River, 'Charlotte's Web' notwithstanding), but if anyone could get me over that fear it might be this lady.

We did manage to get some time away from museums and away from food (well, for a while anyway!). Here are we, busy taking each other's photos, in the Luxembourg Gardens:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_kJ852QCI/AAAAAAAAAwg/ejV3ro8GD5I/s320/jamesluxembourggardens.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251166550156001314" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_kJxVXyYI/AAAAAAAAAwo/ZX2KuDwAlBw/s320/patluxembourggardens.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251166547050219906" />

Here's one my dh took just off the Ile de la Citee (we were staying, by then, one island over on the Ile St Louis) on probably our first day. (Most of these photos were taken over a couple of days, since I don't always carry a camera, so you are seeing the same clothes over and over again.)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyJ85y0kiI/AAAAAAAAAvI/rlAyOKt6wQc/s320/PatRosesNotreDame2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241215745751552546" />

Roses are irrestible to me - a childhood thing. These were close by a very old church, St Julien Le Pauvre.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_r28zTcTI/AAAAAAAAAxg/5a55_RhTiiw/s320/StJulienLePauvre%3F.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251175019804062002" />

(But the link given above provides a better photo!)

Another childhood thing with me is gargoyles - they fascinate me still. This one gook me by surprise.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyK8qHNETI/AAAAAAAAAvQ/Wk9dnxazlRc/s320/MedievalMuseumGargoyle.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241216841053704498" />

This gargoyle was above the entrance to the Medieval Museum - a delightful place, also on the left bank, which should not be missed. I'm a sucker for medieval stuff :)

Okay, so we did have the chance to do something a little different. Did I say music earlier? Yes, and we attended a splendid performance of the Munich Philharmonic at the Theatre Champs Elysee (no photos there, sorry, only wonderful memories), but also see below for a complete musical change of pace.

An absolutely lovely thing that happened on this trip was my chance to meet a cyber pal - 'Pel' - with whom I am privileged to co-host on several groups. Somehow people one meets in cyberspace don't quite seem real. Pel is one of the realest and loveliest people I can hope to meet, and I admire her greatly.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyLjNN858I/AAAAAAAAAvY/l7k-dNFJQuE/s320/Pat%26Pel2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241217503312275394" />

She was having an exhibit of her photographs at this cafe, where there was also a musical friend of hers who paid us the compliment of playing for us.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SLyMsoFJ8pI/AAAAAAAAAvg/iED3JJpSgQw/s320/pelsfriend.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241218764653589138" />

He has a great talent and a vibrant personality to match - so much so that all the snaps we took were blurred from his constant movement! That only enhances the memory for us.

And that seems to be a great note to end on for now, but I may take the opportunity to add to it later :) A photo for closure? Okay, here's a photo taken near our hotel - through a window. Beautiful bronze sculptures of fruit dominated the displays. Two apples here:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SN_upvEb3-I/AAAAAAAAAxw/97LPwYTkCiQ/s320/bronzeapples.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251178091314405346" />

New York, November 2007

Strangely, we didn't take many photos on this trip, and those we did take could only be of interest to ourselves. Nevertheless . . . .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHa7PPUEgxI/AAAAAAAAArY/u_bfoU4pWjs/s320/JamesMetNov07.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221566688465814290" />

The FIRST thing you have to know about us and New York is that we go there to attend the opera and to visit friends. Appropriately, therefore, the first photo here (above) is of my dh on our first evening in NYC (and you really really don't want to hear about how long it took us to get there, what with computer breakdowns at the airports!) He is carrying a gift bottle of wine ('coals to Newcastle') to our dear friends, with whom we spent the evening.

A little early for our meeting with our friends, we went first to Bemelmans for a glass of wine AND to see the wonderful decor And to hear Chris Gillespie's performance! Fantastic!! (Expensive bar? Oh yes, but still a great experience one shouldn't miss - and there are people who travel a long way to go to New York just to hear Gillespie play!) We walked from there to our friends' apartment and then on to Candle 79 for arguably the best vegan cuisine in New York. Below we have a strange, almost 'candle-lit' snap of my dh with friend towards the end of dinner.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHfEpdsqAKI/AAAAAAAAAsw/Jk67vG242vc/s320/ShadyPalsCandle79Dec07.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221858509584990370" />

They look like a pretty shady pair!

Before I forget, I should add in the names of a couple of other restaurants we enjoyed and that might interest you:

Dawat, which is Madhur Jaffrey's restaurant, was a delight. It's not vegan or even vegetarian, but it has a good selection of vegetarian dishes and the staff were happy to help us with the ones which were vegan. We love Indian food and were especially pleased to visit the restaurant of one of our 'kitchen saints' - we've been cooking Madhur Jaffrey's recipes from her various cookbooks for something like 35 years now.

Another is Franchia (which is a sister restaurant to HanGawi we ate at on one of our previous visits). Both are Korean and completely vegan. We went to Franchia for a perfect lunch which lasted and lasted and lasted. We have made sure we will go again on our next visit.

And now, nods to our tummies and eating style properly dealt with, on with the rest of New York.

But where was I? Oh yes, we had just dined at Candle 79 - a superb meal. We were staying at a delightful Chelsea B & B called The Inn on 23rd and, the following morning headed for The Cloisters way up at the other end of Mamhattan. I do have a photo or two of that excursion:

Here we are at Fort Tryon Park, on the way to see the various medieval wonders.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHa7PzUMgTI/AAAAAAAAAr4/bcnNuFJziwY/s320/J%26PNov07.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221566698130014514" />

The photo above was taken by a lovely honeymoon couple who had asked us to take their photo and then, somehow thinking that they should reciprocate, signalled that they would then take our photo on our camera. I think they did a very nice job!

It was a gorgeous day, as you can see from the snap I took (below), with the leaves showing their autumn colours just enough.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHa7PcixFhI/AAAAAAAAAro/0zpHJLA_ccQ/s320/GorgeousDayNov07.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221566692017116690" />

Next you will see The Cloisters as we saw it from our walk. Approaching this area by car just doesn't do it justice, I think. The walk from the metro is indescribably lovely and is an event in itself.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHa7PsdsgFI/AAAAAAAAArw/PLgSGdamu5g/s320/CloistersNYCNov07.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221566696290811986" />

All this stone and the incredible things within tugged across the Atlantic!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHa_m67M_jI/AAAAAAAAAsA/SXm-do7Wt0o/s320/JamesCloistersNov07.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221571493356174898" />

Here is my dh, looking a little dour, inside a medieval chapel. These places don't inspire hilarity, do they.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHa_nDJC7UI/AAAAAAAAAsI/o5VmMwkHZL0/s320/JamesCloisters3Nov07.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221571495561719106" />

But get the dh into the sunshine and, well, here he is around some old fruit trees and herbs, looking distinctly pleased to be in the light and warmth.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHa_nUWJV1I/AAAAAAAAAsY/24LchxXpZag/s320/PatCloisters3Nov07.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221571500180068178" />

OK, that's me above, looking a little more sedate in the semi-confines of I-don't-remember-which cloister - no doubt I was imagining Heloise and Abelard.

And now outside in the clean fresh air again.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHa_nrEKSAI/AAAAAAAAAsg/962QOxOTekA/s320/PatCloisters2Nove07.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221571506278647810" />

That night we attended the Metropolitan Opera's The Marriage of Figaro and the following night a performance by the Pennsylvania Ballet at the City Centre.

We also, of course (being indefatigable museum hounds), visited the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and three or four others of which I also have no photos (no photos mean it didn't happen, right? Right!). But wait, here's one of yours truly at MOMA - with 'friend'.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHbCk0v87UI/AAAAAAAAAso/w_EtbUs82II/s320/Pat%26friendMOMANov07.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221574755873516866" />

And that was mostly it for the three days. But here, on a nicer day, is the cafe into which we stumbled that first late morning on the Saturday when the clouds opened and the whole city (except for us) was agog over the visit of the Pope, so that traffic was banned from the central city and walking was restricted by police cordons.

Thoroughly soaked and a little bit disgruntled (couldn't get to our chosen lunch spot!), we ran to what turns out to have been a cafe frequented by the great Siggy Freud, the Cafe Griensteidl. Inside was calm, courtesy, good cups of tea and coffee and respite from the weather and crowds.

Here's my dh, rather damp and not in the best of moods, awaiting sunshine.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHUviUZnF4I/AAAAAAAAAp0/TMgcTY9WGkU/s320/JamesCafeGriensteidlVienna.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221131609644144514" />

Another great place, if you're into indoor glamour (and the high prices that come with it) is the Cafe Central - where we once, some years ago, had a great Greek Salad (minus the fish and the cheese, thanks) at lunchtime on another rainy day! We seem to end up in some interesting or elegant places in the rain, such as the day in Venice when we . . . . Whoops, another time, eh?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHUvilCxH3I/AAAAAAAAAp8/1z_P42NN820/s320/cafecentral.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221131614111735666" />

We did stop in Cafe Central (above) following the opera one evening on this trip - although it was a tight fit timewise before they closed. (We'd been to the Volksoper that evening, not the State Opera, which is in quite a different direction from our pension.) State Opera? Very nice too, as we found out on another evening - see below.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHUvi64fvII/AAAAAAAAAqM/yJ0FAoS0B14/s320/operahousevienna.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221131619974233218" />

And here's a snap of me, just for fun (since you already have one of the dh) - I'm pictured in our room at the Pension Pertschy, of which astoundingly I otherwise seem to have no photo. It's right in the middle of the old town and housed in an old palace. Fantastic place!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHUz_myGFfI/AAAAAAAAAqU/HjaS5IbpFaY/s320/patevening.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221136510841394674" />

I'm looking rather pleased with myself.

And just in case you think we didn't eat in any real restaurants (yes we did - several!) here's a veggie restaurant we found in the centre of Vienna and where we ate about three times to my recollection.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHUz__jFVKI/AAAAAAAAAqc/x2nLd8JTGCs/s320/DieBioBarVonAntun.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221136517489317026" />

The BioBar Von Antun (above) is organic and veggie and apart from a couple of things clearly marked, vegan. The food is fantastic.

Okay, moving on!

Here's the castle in Salzburg, our other venue on this trip!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHU0APYjKyI/AAAAAAAAAqk/3gkf_pt6xs8/s320/CastleInSalzburg.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221136521740102434" />

Now this is a fabulous place - well worth the trouble of getting there (and yes you can take the funicular). I imagine it would have made for very draughty living, though.

And this is our hotel in Salzburg, where we will certainly stay again.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHU0Ax3XdzI/AAAAAAAAAqs/o4lb08Tgikg/s320/HotelWolfSalzburg.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221136530996164402" />

The Hotel Wolf (above) right in the middle of the Old Town, is soooo neat! We just loved it. It made it possible to be in reach of everything we wanted to see without having to hike for miles (we did that a bit anyway, but at least we had a good central homebase from which to start).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHU0BWl2JXI/AAAAAAAAAq0/jCs4LHh3bUA/s320/patsalzburg2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221136540854789490" />

And on yes, above you see another photo of me in Salzburg this time. As you can see, in September the weather continued a little on the cool side, so jackets were mandatory.

Returning to Vienna, we made a quick trip out to Schonbrun to see again all the wonders of past royalty.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHU2v45LNqI/AAAAAAAAAq8/ueIN3ZZO2SM/s320/PatSchonbrun.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221139539359905442" />

And of course, still having to eat, we stopped one day at the most unlikely place. The Cafe Stein (below) looked as if it only dealt with omnivores, but indeed they were able to give us an excellent vegan meal. We were delighted.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ik0j5BecRbY/SHU2wioTt1I/AAAAAAAAArE/31QR5jkb1ug/s320/jamescafestein.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221139550563448658" />

Okay enough - this was all a long time ago now, almost ancient history, right? So I'll do another couple of these 'catching up' posts, sparing you all the scenic and mostly cliche-type holiday snaps (although I don't promise to continue with this kind of consideration!)

Best to all!!!!

Getting Started Here

Hello Everyone - Friends, Family and Nodding Acquaintances:

It seems appropriate to have a special blog for all those ramblings in which I am known to indulge - whether meandering around town, travelling between North American destinations, venturing abroad, or simply taking off on flights of fancy (certainly easier on the patience, nerves and budget these days than the other kind).

So here I go: an unorthodox and largely unthought-out (dammit, I know myself too well on this kind of thing!) series of entries on what's what and where's where with 'River' and her (extended or otherwise) family.
